Rewind Seven Years - To High School!

All of the recent high school graduations have made me sit back and reminisce a little.
{I can't believe it's been SEVEN whole years!}

 High School is four years in a persons life - I don't agree with the common perception that they are the "best years of your life" -  I think they are just the beginning!

Amongst the number of things I learned in high school, perhaps the greatest lesson I took from High School, was one that I didn't learn until recently.

Things that make you "Cool" In High School
...Mean Nothing Now.

High school is its own little world. Popularity is {most commonly} based on a person's looks, activities, and their sense of fashion that place them in their "appropriate" spot on the social hierarchy.

Throwing the winning touch down  in a high school football game, wearing the latest trends, telling the best fart joke, and scoring the highest score on a calculus test are all things that fuel the "cool factor" in each person's "clique" in school.
...and then you graduate.
When High School ends, those things don't matter. If I could go back, I would have spent less time worrying about what jeans were in style, what hairstyle Britney Spears had, and who was "going out" with who, and would have spent more time on building myself as a person.

 Instead of gossiping about who is dating who, or ditching a "boring" class to get a coffee, I wish I would have taken time to get to know the girl I was gossiping about, and taken advantage of the free education I was being given.

I think part of the beauty of life is looking back and reflecting. I may not have gained everything from high school that I would as "adult Jeni" but I think that's part of the point. I was able to take these experiences from high school, some a day after graduating, and others I'm sure I've yet to learn, and apply them to life that I live today as both a wife and a mother.

  1. I graduated 7 years ago too! It's so crazy! You are sooooo right. Things that made you cool then, do not make you cool now.

  2. Great perspective! I attended my 10 year reunion a few years ago and it was so nice to talk to people that I wasn't friends with back then. But meeting people again as an adult, you have a different outlook on what's important and different priorities.

    1. That is one of the best/worst things...so many people I would have NEVER been friends with in high school because I was too busy being in a "clique" are some of my closest friends now!

  3. I completely agree. And it's funny because my mom would tell me these things when I was in high school, but it's so difficult to see past your current situation. Those things absolutely do not matter, and once you're out of high school, no one really cares about what your reputation was when you were there. Hindsight is always 20/20 though :)

    1. You couldn't have said it better!
      And now I find myself being that "old person" telling young kids those things, knowing very well, they just have to figure it out themselves.
